I have visited over 300 salons in the last 16 months and I’ve come to find that many stylists are sharpening their shears every 3 to 4 months. Most shear companies use machines to sharpen and take too much steel off. Many of the shears are not usable at the end of 3rd year and stylists end up spending $300 for sharpening. Let’s say stylists buy a pair of $200 shears, plus $300 for sharpening and now have to buy another shears ending up to a total of $700.
You have seen many companies sharpen shears at conventions and take about 5 minutes to complete a sharpen job. Here at Fan Out Shears, we sharpen our shears by hand and takes about 40 minutes to complete a sharpening job. We charge $35 for sharpen jobs which includes shipping. We believe that it is a service for our customers and we don’t make money for sharpening.
Our experience from our customers is that our Molybdenum shears last about 1 year, Cobalt shears last about 1.5 years before sharpening and our texture shears are lasting over 3 years. Shears last differently depending on how you take care of them, how you operate your shears and how you set you shears’ tension.
My wish is that many stylists will be able to use the best shears in the world. We are now offering a 12 month payment plan. I hope you enjoy Fan Out shears.

Tak Ishida
We use 2 different types of metal to make our Damascus Shears. We fold nickel and Cobalt stainless steel together many times to make the Damascus Steel. The alternating layers of soft and hard materials result in more flexibility and strength to the steel than solid steel. We use stainless steel for the handles. We then apply a special heat treatment to the shears which makes them harder and smoother. The blades of the Damascus Shears have a wood grain pattern. These are very special shears and all have been numbered.
